Update on East Yorkshire Avian Influenza H5N8 - 20th November 2014

1. The farm near Driffield has now been cleared of ducks. Problems have been encountered with one of the lorries, believed to be protestors, the Police were assisting; 2. Cleaning, washing and disinfecting should be completed tomorrow. This process – cleansing and disinfecting (C&D) - will have to be repeated again before Defra will announce the farm officially clear of infection. Avian Influenza confirmed on Yorkshire Duck Breeding Premises - 17th November 2014

A case of bird flu has been confirmed at a duck breeding farm in East Yorkshire, officials have said. The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) said the risk to public health was very low. A cull of poultry is being carried out at the site and an exclusion zone is in place. The exact strain has not been confirmed, but the deadly H5N1 form has been ruled out by Defra officials. The virus spreads between birds and, in rare cases, can affect humans. The new faciltiy allows clients to register, log on and access all of their laboratory results, pathology, serology, parasitology, salmonella results as well as prescriptions on line.
