Stephen Lister qualified from the Royal Veterinary College, London, in March 1979, with the degree of Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine, BVetMed, (with distinction in Veterinary Medicine), and a Bachelor of Science degree, BSc, (2nd class - upper division) in Medical Sciences and Applied Physiology.
Stephen holds a Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons Certificate in Poultry Medicine and Production, awarded in 1997.
In 2008, he became a Foundation Diplomate of the European College of Poultry Veterinary Science and is currently a Board Member.
In 2010, Stephen was awarded the Poultry Industry Special Merit Award by the British Poultry Council for services to the poultry industry
After qualifying as a veterinary surgeon in 1979 Stephen spent a short period in small animal and laboratory based poultry work, and then spent 10 years in the State Veterinary Service of MAFF in 2 regional VI Centres and at Poultry Department Central Veterinary Laboratory (CVL), Weybridge.
As a Senior Research Officer at the CVL, Weybridge he was involved in research on infectious stunting syndrome, kidney disease, salmonella, turkey rhinotracheitis, and avian paramyxoviruses, notably Newcastle disease and Avian Influenza.
In 1989, Stephen entered specialist poultry practice, and in 1995 set up Crowshall Veterinary Services with Claire Knott, as a dedicated poultry practice offering specialist services in poultry disease diagnosis and consultancy with full post-mortem and laboratory facilities.
Stephens special interests include practical approaches to animal welfare and medicines issues, having spent 10 years as a Council Member of the Farm Animal Welfare Council (where he chaired the Pigs, Poultry and Fish Standing Committee) and served on the Government medicines advisory committees, the Veterinary Products Committee and Veterinary Residues Committee. He has served 10 years as a Trustee of the British Veterinary Association Animal Welfare Foundation.
